Elon Musk and Amber Heard’s Relationship Timeline: The Way They Were

A star-studded romance. Amid her high-profile divorce from Johnny Depp in 2016, Amber Heard made headlines when she started dating Elon Musk.

At the time, Heard and Musk kept their romance low-key after being spotted spending time together. After going public with their relationship in 2017, the pair briefly parted ways before giving things another shot.

In February 2018, an insider confirmed to Us Weekly that Heard and Musk had split for good. “Amber wants her independence and prefers being friends rather than romantically linked,” the source said at the time, with another insider adding, “Elon decided it was time to end things, and Amber agreed. They both care for one another, but the timing just isn’t right.”

Heard and Musk, for their part, addressed their decision months later, telling Us in August 2018, “We would like to speak for ourselves. The distance has been really tough on our relationship because we haven’t been able to see each other much. All relationships have their ups and downs, of course.”

The joint statement continued, “We would like to state directly that we have the utmost respect for one another, and it would be troubling if anyone had the impression that we thought otherwise. As a closing note, it is worth bearing in mind that events are always amplified and dramatized in a high-profile relationship, whether the people involved like it or not (and we definitely don’t). The reality is that this is just a normal relationship with a giant magnifying glass applied.”

After months of speculation, Heard and Musk went public with their romance. They both posted an Instagram snap at a dinner where Heard was posing in red lipstick which left a mark on Musk’s cheek.

August 2017

We confirmed that the duo parted ways due to their careers. “He’s super busy and works all the time,” a source explained. “Amber is filming [Aquaman] in Australia. … She’s in no position to settle with him. She feels her career is just starting.”

“I just broke up with my girlfriend,” the philanthropist told Rolling Stone. “I was really in love, and it hurt bad. Well, she broke up with me more than I broke up with her, I think.”

During the interview, Musk asked to be set up with someone as he faced the next chapter in his love life. “Is there anybody you think I should date? It’s so hard for me to even meet people,” he added. “I’m looking for a long-term relationship. I’m not looking for a one-night stand. I’m looking for a serious companion or soulmate, that kind of thing.”

Five months after their split, Musk, and Heard gave their relationship another try. The twosome confirmed that they had pulled the plug on their relationship for good one month later.

Heard wrote via Instagram, “Although we have broken up, Elon and I care deeply for one another and remain close. Thank you for the continued support, respect, and privacy during these difficult, very human times.”

Musk, for his part, later commented on another one of his ex-girlfriend’s Instagram posts, writing, “Although Amber and I did break up, we are still friends, remain close and love one another.”

During Depp’s defamation trial against Heard in early 2022, their former agent Christian Carino claimed the actress said she was “just filling space” by dating Musk. In a pre-recorded deposition, the talent agent recalled asking Heard why she was upset about her split from the CEO if she wasn’t “in love with him.”

Depp’s attorney later shared text exchanges between Carino and Heard with the court. “I hate that yet again a man lets me fall on the spikes by myself. Meaning, they are mad at me for leaving them and put things like this out there,” a text from the Aquaman actress read.

In the correspondence, Heard admitted that she wasn’t sure how to approach dating life again. “I don’t know how or where to start. There’s no way to begin,” she texted at the time. “Finally I am single, clear in my heart and mind.”

According to Heard, she became reacquainted with Musk after Depp “stood [her] up” at the 2016 Met Gala.

“I didn’t recognize [Elon] until we started talking and he reminded me we had met once before,” she said while taking the stand in Fairfax, Virginia. “He seemed like a real gentleman. He was really nice. He sat at a nearby table and we got to speaking that night and eventually became friends.”

Musk weighed in amid Depp’s defamation trial against Heard. “I hope they both move on. At their best, they are each incredible,” the Tesla CEO wrote in the comments section of podcast host Lex Fridman’s social media post about the case.
